I had a new student pose this question recently. The first reaction from others in the class was a reassuring smile. Any regular practitioner of  breathing knows how important this simple but overlooked practice is. As we grow in our yoga practice it is very apparent how much bringing awareness to the breath can have on our daily lives.
This awareness helps us focus better, relax easier, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, control depression, relieve pain, relax when faced with a hard task and a host of other benefits too numerous to mention. Just watching and bringing awareness to the breath for one minute can have a long lasting effect on our nervous systems. The wonderful aspect of a breathing practice is that you can do it anytime, anywhere and no one even needs to know that you are practicing your breathing! So start today, right now. Watch the breath coming and going. Do not over think  it, just do it. As you keep practicing you will notice the positive effects very quickly.
Please refer to my March posting on greater details on how to start a breathing practice.
