Props as Helpful Support
Some traditions of yoga believe that props are not necessary as they make us rely on them so we do not use our bodies full potential. Teaching many different levels and body types in yoga I see how props help. For someone new to yoga or that has physical or anatomical limitations, props can give them the confidence and ability to work with the pose within there safe limits. As the blossoming yogi learns about there body they will find a time that is intuitively correct to relinquish the prop or not. Blocks can add support where balance is unstable, straps can lend extra support in the areas of stretching, opening or holding, bolsters can allow for a deeper sense of relaxation to occur where otherwise it might be a strain. If you work within your own practice as a yogi you will know whether a prop is correct for you or not, do not let your ego or your teachers allow you to make the wrong decision for what is correct for your body in this moment of time.
