What is a "Yoga Practice?"
Many people want to know what is yoga? They do not realize that the answer is not so simple. Approximately 15 million people have taken up some form of yoga in the United States alone. There is something to be said for the wide spread positive affects that yoga has on people. Yoga is the practice of breathing( pranayama), asana ( postures), concentration( dharana), meditation-focus (dhyana) , with-drawing inward ( pratyahara). One or all of these aspects of a yoga practice can be considered "doing yoga". I tell my students if all you do is practice your breathing that is your yoga practice. A practice is as individual as the person. When individuals take a yoga class they need to be aware and open to the "practice of yoga". This will vary from studio to studio, gym to gym. There are lots of styles of yoga as well as different teachers within those styles. If you want a more exercise based class then search that out, if you want a more spiritual based class, look for that. Each teacher will have there personal beliefs, strengths or weaknesses in full view during there class. If the class resonates with you then this is your practice, if not move on. Sometimes you may grow in your own practice and need to search out a new or different teacher based on your individual needs. Life is about change , a practice is alive and always changing and growing. Find a yoga class that will help you grow in whatever type of practice you are doing.
