Applying Yoga Philosophy to your Practice

The eight limbs of yoga are the framework for a yogi's "path" in their practice of yoga. The ethical and emotional yamas and  niyamas of yoga can be applied to your practice and daily life. Ahimsa is the practice of non- harming. For this post it is applied towards how you treat yourself in your practice and how others treat you. Always being aware that in your physical practice you are working at the level you are at that specific time( meeting yourself where you are). Having thoughts of anger, ego or anxiousness during your practice is not practicing ahimsa. Finding a balance of emotions while in your practice will carry over to your daily life. Finding this balance is the practice of Satya, freedom to find your true nature. Finding this emotional balance and not extending it to others (stealing/draining there energy) is the practice of Asteya. Also not arriving late for appointments, class or meetings is the practice of Asteya. Be happy, the practice of Santosha. Being content with happiness and also being happy with unhappiness. Meaning, we find contentment to accept situations exactly as they are with out trying to change them. In our practice we apply this to our physical practice by being content with the practice we have as it unfolds. Being in the moment, being content and joyful in the practice for what it is. There are other yamas and niyamas to practice , I will cover these in future posts. Namaste.
